The Project:

This riverside project was to rejuvenate an old car park and a previously demolished pub. The scope of the work was to build a 63 Bedroom Travelodge, a Cinema and 5 retail units.

Planning consent was obtained for a site in the heart of Thetford that includes an area of Scheduled Ancient Monument which was the former site of the former Anchor Hotel in Bridge Street dating back to the Middle-ages.

The regeneration scheme was designed in response to public consultations, significant archaeological constraints, local heritage issues and enhancing the existing riverside public realm.   This ambitious 17 month building project was spearheaded by Breckland Bridge, a joint venture between Breckland Council and The Land Group.

The riverside development was completed in October 2016, meeting its autumn opening target.

Services & Expertise:

Regeneration – The £8m Thetford Riverside Leisure Complex brings a new cinema, hotel and a series of restaurants to the area.  It is a development which has been delivered by Breckland Bridge, an innovative joint venture between Breckland Council and The Land Group. The regeneration project is a key part of the council’s vision for Thetford and will act as a catalyst for further development in the town and across the district.  Work began on the site, on Bridge Street near the town centre, in June 2015 and construction was completed in October 2016.

Travelodge – The Metframe load bearing walls and concrete floors formed the top three storeys of the hotel building. The acoustic properties of the hotel’s building structure were an important factor in the design process to prevent sound travelling between rooms. Metsec was engaged early in the tender process to help assess the foundation and loading requirements of the building, establish a value engineered plan and achieve any savings possible.

Light Cinema – Visitors to The Light Cinema are able to enjoy extra wide and extra comfy seating in each of the three, fully licensed screens, which all boast incredible 2D and 3D visuals with state of the art digital picture and sound. The cinema also has a café and bar so you can enjoy a coffee, light snack, glass of wine or a beer before or after your blockbuster movie, art-house film, or screening of a ballet, opera or theatre performance.

Community Engagement – Our Community team were pleased to work closely with the surrounding community. Our hoarding was looking very colourful with some fabulous artwork from both Thetford Grammar School and The Keystone Trust – Painting Therapy Group.
