Innovation in low water commissioning sees SPA collect Water Industry Award

✨Congratulations to Anglian Water Services Strategic Pipeline Alliance for winning the Groundbreaker award at this year’s Water Industry Awards for innovation in low water commissioning.✨

The Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) is an alliance of Anglian Water Services, Farrans Construction, Mott MacDonald Bentley | MMB, Costain Group PLC and Jacobs who are contracted to deliver one of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK.

This is Anglian Water’s flagship project, the biggest in the water company’s history and, in addition to being one of Europe’s biggest environmental projects, it is one of the UK’s largest construction projects.

One of the most innovative practices being used in the project is low water commissioning.

SPA’s pipes are delivered to its sites already meeting ‘food hygiene standards’ and once new water pipes are laid, they need to be made clean enough to safely carry drinking water. Traditionally, that means flushing them with vast amounts of water. On this project it would have involved half an Olympic swimming pool of water.

SPA’s innovative technique uses air to drive water between swabs to disinfect the pipes, meaning that we will use only 190 baths full of water, rather than 3,800.

It is just one of the smart new green and clean technology methods that Anglian Water is adopting to save every drop of water it can.
