The Scottish Government backed A92/A96 Haudagain improvement project opened to traffic in May 2022, delivering 500 metres of new dual carriageway, allowing road users in Aberdeen to bypass an area well known for causing significant queues and delays for traffic.
The contract to construct the A92/A96 Haudagain Improvement project was awarded to Farrans in January 2019 with a value of £18 million.
The new dual carriageway link road will take traffic between the A92 North Anderson Drive and A96 Auchmill Road and improve traffic flow, alleviate congestion in the area and improve journey time reliability.
The opening of this £49.5 million new road will further enhance the benefits road users in the north-east are already enjoying from the £745 million investment in the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route/Balmedie-Tipperty project. Prior to cutting the ribbon to mark the road opening, Minister for Transport, Jenny Gilruth MSP visited the Middlefield Community Project to hear more about some of the community benefits that we delivered during the construction period.
In February 2022, our team delivering the A92/A96 Haudagain Improvements in Aberdeen for Transport Scotland received full marks in every section on the latest Considerate Constructors Scheme audit report.
The summary said: “Throughout the three registration periods of the project the site has achieved high scores on each occasion. The support for the community has been well received throughout the project and credit must go to the company’s community liaison policy which has been effectively applied. Environmental awareness is of the highest degree and of note was the previous registration where an innovation was awarded for control of the site water run-off. Attention to such things as a wildflower garden only enhances the reputation of the company. Welfare and safety also have good robust policies in place together with good monitoring and encouragement of the workforce to participate has resulted in the success of the project.”
This was a high-profile project in a sensitive area which has required agreement from many stakeholders. The road passes through a residential area which has a high concentration of utilities which need to be made safe and diverted either temporarily or permanently. Following consultation with all stakeholders, including Scottish Water, Vodafone and Openreach, Farrans provided safe access to the site and working collaboratively with the various utility providers.
Traffic management and utilities management added complexities to this project. The Farrans’ team worked through the night and over weekends to minimise disruption for road users.
